Past attendees' responses

• “Overall, I was very pleased with the event.  The advice I got was incredible, and I think somewhat counter intuitive to what I thought I should be doing to manage my career path.  From the other student questions, it seems to me that I wasn't the only one as well.  This event is essential for any student that wants to prepare themselves for the next step, and I will highly recommend it to everybody.” 2009

• “This event overall gave me a real kick to start fine-tuning my job search, and has provided me with a lot of tools to do that. The value of being around others who are in a similar position was also really useful and I made a lot of new connections.  I was very pleasantly surprised with how useful it was.” 2009

• “I thought this symposium was extremely well-planned and well-organized.  I am a bench scientist looking to pursue an alternative (non bench) science-related career.  Before I attended WCUB, I was feeling pretty dejected about my career prospects, but afterwards, I felt so much more optimistic and even excited about all of the new career options I had discovered and contacts I had found! Thank you for providing such a thorough glimpse into the many career possibilities out there for people with science PhDs!” 2009

• “I really liked the variety of careers discussed, and the range of positions within those careers that the panelists represented.” 2009

• “I like how it put all the possible careers you can follow with a PhD into one place.  Having them all presented in such rapid succession helped me better compare each as a possible fit for my career.” 2009

Supported by a New York City regional consortium of colleges and universities and recognized as a nationally preeminent career convention. What Can You Be With A PhD?: A Science and Technology Focused Career Convention is a unique opportunity to connect the private and public sector, industry and academe with the rising generation of scientists and engineers who will become tomorrow’s leaders and innovators.

Over 1200 graduate students and postdoctoral trainees in the biosciences, physical sciences and engineering in the larger metropolitan area, representing the region’s great academic institutions from Connecticut to Pennsylvania, attended the last convention in 2009.

As the importance and influence of science and technology to the broader economy and larger society grows, the event fosters early career exploration and planning through exhibitors, industry representatives, symposia focusing on opportunities and trends in career sectors, and networking. The overall program will feature exhibitors and symposia in the following tracks:

• Academic, private and government research and administrative careers.
• Biomedical, physical science and technology-based industry careers
• Financial, legal and corporate careers
• Careers in publishing and communications
• Entrepreneurship

The 2011 event will be a a two-day, multi-function event on November 5th and 6th hosted at NYU Langone Medical Center.
